Why sample size matters

The size of your sample directly affects the reliability and validity of your findings. A sample that is too small may fail to detect real effects and leaves your study underpowered, while an unnecessarily large sample wastes time, money, and participant goodwill. Getting the balance right is central to sound research design.

Key factors that influence sample size

Effect size. Smaller effects are harder to detect and require larger samples. If you expect the difference between groups to be subtle, you will need more participants to observe it reliably.

Statistical power. Power is the probability of detecting an effect when one truly exists. Most researchers aim for a power of 0.80, meaning an 80 percent chance of finding a real effect.

Significance level. The alpha level, commonly set at 0.05, reflects the risk you are willing to accept of a false positive. A stricter alpha requires a larger sample.

Population variability. The more varied your population, the larger the sample you need to capture that variation accurately.

Study design. Comparative designs, repeated measures, and subgroup analyses each carry their own sample size implications.

1. Define your research question and the primary outcome you want to measure. 2. Estimate the expected effect size from previous studies or a pilot. 3. Decide on your desired power and significance level. 4. Use a power analysis tool such as G*Power, or the relevant functions in SPSS or R, to calculate the minimum sample. 5. Adjust upward to account for anticipated dropout or incomplete responses.

A note on qualitative research

Sample size logic differs for qualitative work. Rather than statistical power, qualitative researchers rely on the principle of saturation, the point at which new data no longer produce new themes or insights. Sample sizes are typically smaller and justified by depth rather than breadth.
