The map of your study

A conceptual framework is a map showing how the key ideas in your study relate to each other. It is where your reading of the literature meets your own design, and it guides everything from your questions to your analysis.

Framework versus theory

A theoretical framework draws on an established theory to explain your phenomenon. A conceptual framework is your own arrangement of the variables you intend to study, often informed by theory but tailored to your specific question. Many studies use both: theory to ground the work, and a conceptual framework to put it into practice.

Identify your variables

Start by naming your variables clearly. The independent variables are the presumed causes or influences. The dependent variable is the outcome you are explaining. Mediating or moderating variables sit between the two or change the strength of the relationship. Listing these forces you to be clear about what you are actually studying.

Show the relationships

The heart of the framework is the relationships, usually drawn as boxes and arrows. Each arrow is a claim that one variable influences another. Keep the diagram clean. A framework cluttered with every conceivable link is no clearer than no framework at all.

Ground it in the literature

Every relationship in the framework should be defensible from prior research. As you write the literature review, note which studies support each link. The framework then becomes a synthesis of what is already known, with your study placed to test or extend it.

Keep it focused

There is always a temptation to include every variable you have read about. Resist it. The framework should contain only the variables your study will actually examine. If a concept will not appear in your data collection and analysis, it does not belong there.

Use it to drive the design

Once it is built, the framework should shape your instrument, your hypotheses, and your analysis. Each arrow suggests a relationship to test. Each variable suggests items to measure. When your questionnaire and analysis mirror the framework, the study holds together tightly.

A diagram on its own is not enough. Walk the reader through each relationship and its basis in the literature in a short paragraph. That narrative is what turns a sketch into a genuine contribution, and it is what examiners look for when they judge whether your design is grounded.
